The Canberra Rex Hotel was built during the late 1950’s and opened in December 1960. The hotel at that time was the first large project constructed in Canberra after the Second World War. Guests over time have included US presidents, national and international celebrities and famous athletes. Extensive photography is displayed throughout the ground floor of the hotel recognizing our colorful history.
The Hotel has recently completed an extensive renovation of its rooms, public and conference areas further enhancing the modern convenience of the hotel.
During 2008 a new 4 ½ star hotel will be constructed and integrated with the existing hotel. The 4 ½ star hotel will offer 155 suites spread out over eight floors. It will also feature four additional conference rooms with the ability to cater up to approximately 600 guests at any one time. Plus, a new restaurant and bar area, underground secure parking and state-of-the-art gymnasium and pool facility.
With the construction of the new hotel we will be able to offer 311 hotel suites, 11 conference/function rooms, 2 restaurants, brasserie and 2 bars, providing Canberra's most comprehensive meeting, function and conference facility.
